Totally stop all exportation of timber from Russia
-70% of all trees cut down are exported
-The main importers of Russian wood are China, Japan, and Korea
Stopping the export of wood and wood products would enable Russian timber companies to provide for domestic demand and to reduce stress on the taiga forest.
Solution Numer Two
Increase Regulation
-They need to have better inspection at their border crossings
-Other countries need to use less or get timber from legal sources
-Other countries need to change their policies to reduce demand for wood and wood products
-Tougher penalties for illegal imports
Solution Number Three
Stop Corruption in the government
-Government officials are often paid off to look the other way concerning illegal logging
-Corruption is involved in 50% of the timber industry in Russia
-Because of the corruption,
“It is difficult to ensure exports are the products of sustainable development.”
Solution Number Four
Recycle Wood and Wood Products
According to Green Peace international, recycling one ton of news paper:
Saves 17 trees
saves enough energy to power an average for 6 months
eliminates three cubic meters of land fill
saves 31,780 liters of water takes 43% less energy than producing a ton of paper from virgin pulp.
